Monsieur Jourdain has big dreams: he wants to become a “gentleman.” When a commoner struggles to gain entry into high society and imitate the nobility, pretense runs rampant, intrigues arise, tutors come and go, and misunderstandings follow one after another…
Turks make an uninvited appearance, marriages are arranged, and arguments over vowels and consonants unfold amid a whirl of powdered wigs and flamboyant costumes.
Created in 1670 for the court of Louis XIV, this comedy-ballet blends theater, music, and dance. Under the guise of a baroque musical farce, *Le Bourgeois Gentilhomme* portrays the illusions of a wealthy bourgeois fascinated by the nobility. In an attempt to gain entry into this idealized world, he surrounds himself with tutors specializing in various fields—dance, music, fencing, and philosophy—and falls prey to flatterers and impostors. In a whirlwind of misunderstandings, arranged marriages, and scenes inspired by the East, the play humorously explores the boundaries between social classes, the power of appearances, and the absurdity of pretensions.
