A leading trombonist on the French music scene for the past 20 years, and a longtime collaborator with Thomas de Pourquery, Le Sacre du Tympan, Nougaro, Manu Dibango, Tony Allen, and so many others, Daniel Zimmermann embarks on his third album with Label Bleu, offering a highly personal reinterpretation of Serge Gainsbourg’s work, alongside the musicians from his multi-award-winning album “Montagnes Russes.”
Lively, playful, and moving, the album shifts between offbeat arrangements and the creation of entirely new pieces, crafted from elements drawn from the original work of the legendary singer-songwriter. Focusing on the pre-Gainsbarre era of Gainsbourg—his most creative period in terms of melodies—these four strong-willed musicians combine the raw energy of a rock band with the fiery creative freedom of jazz. From Bonnie & Clyde stranded in the Sahel to a whimsical Comic Strip, from poignant Amours perdues to languid Machins choses, from New York USA to Melody Nelson—as if suspended above relentless grooves— they pay numerous nods to the master only to better break away from him, infusing each of their flights of fancy with his spirit of mischief and irreverence.
