A book, a debate: "The Italian", by Arturo Perez Reverte (Spain)

Written in 1945 and subsequently rediscovered, this deeply moving account retraces the journey of Françoise Frenkel, a Jewish bookseller and refugee who was forced to flee Nazi Germany in 1939. Her story combines fear, loneliness, exile and the anonymous solidarity she encountered as she fled through war-torn France to Switzerland in 1943. A poignant portrait of persecution but also of humanity, her text is accompanied by a preface by Patrick Modiano. Today, "Rien où poser sa tête" is considered a universal 20th-century testimony to exile.
