Moulin David - Divonne-les-Bains

At the Moulin David hydroelectric plant, there will be a demonstration at 11 a.m. of the spectacular steam engine dating from 1907, to draw attention to the “Saveurs savantes” program as part of the Science Festival in the Pays de Gex.
The Divonnelectro association, which manages the Moulin David, is participating in the Fête de la Science with a children’s workshop and a school field trip—both of which are already fully booked.
The general public is invited to come out in large numbers on October 4 and 11 to see a demonstration of the Winterthur auxiliary engine. This single-cylinder engine, with a 20-liter displacement and a 3-metric-ton flywheel, was used by the Société des Bains to drive the dynamo that generated 110-volt direct current during low-water periods.
Its operation is reminiscent of a vintage locomotive and evokes a bygone era when “planned obsolescence” was unknown. The electricity generated by the mill was initially used to power the lighting in the Grand Hotels (beginning in 1887). Later, it was decided to build a special small house to install an “ice-making machine using Divonne’s pure water,” which was a sensational technological advance.
Divonnelectro will explore the theme of refined flavors by discussing food preparation and preservation—How does a refrigerator work? Free of charge.
